Tina (Christiane Evans) has successfully tutored math and language, and provides creative ideas to resolve conflicts and challenges. Through tutoring, she is hoping to support education and promote learning and understanding.
Tina's Story
Remembering the excitement of learning to read, when Tina first realized that she could decipher the signs in a store window, has continued to influence her choices in education in later years. Tutoring was a natural step to try to pass this joy of learning on to others.
Tina's decision to go to college did not include the idea of learning math again. But it was a mandatory part of the curriculum, there was no way around it. In the process of reviewing everything, starting from the very beginning with 1x1=1..., Tina realized that it wasn't as hard as she had thought, and after a while math was one of her favorite subjects.
Why Math?
Continuing with math studies all the way to calculus, she finished at the top of her class. Adding physics and statistics, Tina found that math helps us to solve things in many areas of life. From totaling the items of a grocery list, to calculating a car loan or mortgage, to building complex structures and planes, the process is like adding building blocks to what we have already learned. If we miss one, the whole tower of blocks may be shaky.
Outside influences and stresses can interfere with a student’s ability to learn. Keeping this in mind, it takes listening, empathy, and creative thinking to understand where the challenge lies. Finding ways to address those challenges and possibly getting them resolved, has a positive impact on learning. Once we find the road block, we can use relative examples, and explain things in a way that makes sense.
As Math is often a dreaded subject, we hope to take the dread out of it... and who knows, at some point it may turn out to be fun.
